Disabled mom needs accessible housing

Disabled mom needs accessible housing

From Lisa Bane

Because of my disability, I have trouble navigating the two flights of stairs in my house. I need to move into a one-story house this year. I'm having surgery to fuse my neck on February 6th, and will have medical bills

Two more days before I go into surgery to fuze my neck!

More Info

Over the past 27 years, my worst enemy has been my own body, attacking my joints and limiting my ability to do things.  A doctor once told me that I had been hit with the "Unlucky Stick", as he looked over the damaged joints in my foot caused by rheumatoid arthritis. He was not wrong.  My list of surgeries to date equals 15, with neck fusion surgery scheduled in a couple weeks.  After that, I will need lower back surgery to alleviate the pressure on the nerves that are causing pain and weakness in my hips.

The stairs in my house have become an ever increasing burden.  There is no bathroom on the first floor and the laundry is in the basement.  I use both handrails on the stairs to keep pressure off my fractured right kneecap and because the nerve pain and weakness in my left hip.  I rely on my husband to carry things up and down the stairs, but he works two jobs, so I am left with no help.

We are looking into buying a one-level modular home this year as soon as possible.  I need surgery on my neck to stabilize my vertebrae and remove the pressure my C2 vertebra is putting on my brainstem.  After that, the doctor will operate on my lower back to address the limiting pain and weakness in my hips that keeps me from doing most activities.

Besides me, my 19 year old daughter will benefit from a one-story house.  She was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis 2 years ago.

We need help with the downpayment and moving costs so that we can have an affordable monthly mortgage.  We will also need help paying the medical bills from my upcoming neck surgery and rehabilitation.
