Bring Basil Home

From Sophia Espinoza

After a short fight with a mysterious infection, our sweet dog, Basil, died half-way through a roadtrip intended to bring her to an appointment with her primary vet. We need help with her final expenses.

Update #4

Hello,

Two days ago, I left Northeastern Oregon and returned to Salem. On the way, I stopped in La Grande to collect Basil's ashes and bring her home with me. Prior to leaving Wallowa County, I hiked Murray Saddle for the first time, and could only think of how much I wished I could have taken Basil with me. The time we have with our pets never seems to be enough and I am constantly reminded of the things we never got to experience together. Though she has finally made her way home to my family, we are still struggling to put together the money that was lent to us to pay her original emergency vet bills. This time of the year can be rough with back-to-school costs, but any donation is accepted and greatly appreciated. Thank you to all of those who have continued to show lasting support.

More Info

Some of you may know me from Wallowa County, or some may know me through my time at Western Oregon University, but if you know me, there is a very high likelihood you've heard me talk about my dog. Many of you have met her, many of you have not (but have seen photos!), but Basil has been nothing short of my best friend for four years. Exuberant and full of energy and intelligence, she has been everything I could ever ask for in a dog. Always healthy, Basil has never once struck medical concern with me until recently. Within the span of a few days, Basil went from a joyful and healthy dog to being in constant, immense pain and being plagued with frequent seizures. She has been admitted to a hospital and is having tests ran with a team. As of August 24th, 2023, she is being evaluated at a secondary clinic after the emergency visit last night.

It is no secret that I am not of means, and the bills from these veterinary visits pose an incredible burden to me and my family. We want to do anything we can to save her, but we need help. The full extent of her treatment is not known, so the costs are hazy, but after the first night costing over $1,600, we know that $5,000 is a likely ballpark estimate for total cost.

We are incredibly grateful for anything that can be donated to Basil's medical costs, it's a lot to ask for, but thank you regardless!

Update #3

Hello All,

Today marks a week since Basil's sudden passing and it is safe to say that the emotional burden has not let up. Thanks to the generous donations of many, my family and I were able to scrape together the money to get Basil cremated. She will be picked up this coming Tuesday as I return to the west side of Oregon. Getting this portion paid off was a wonderful weight off of our shoulders, but over two thousand dollars remain in medical bills accrued from Basil's emergency vet visits. The back-to-school season can be hard for many financially, but if anyone can donate any amount, it would be dearly appreciated. Big thank you to all of those who have already been kind enough to donate!

Update #2

Sophia's mom here. Some of you may not know that Basil was brought into our family out of necessity, and after alot of research/preperation, following years of struggling with crippling CPTSD. That being said, what Basil did for my health paled in comparison to what she did for Sophia's heart. Everyone who met Basil adored her and we all loved her immensely but Sophia lost a best friend when Basil died. She had so many plans for the two of them. We should've had many, many more years to love on her and witnessing Sophia's heartbreak has been nothing short of catastrophic, as her mother. However, watching her friends, classmates, professors, etc. surround her with love and support during this time is beyond heartwarming and I want to thank you all. Your kindness and thoughtful generosity will never be forgotton.

Update #1

After spending thousands of dollars at an emergency vet clinic in Salem, Basil seemed to be stabilizing. I had recently made an appointment with her primary vet on the East side of the state for her annual exam, shots, etc. and I was half-way through the drive over when she suffered another seizure and died. Basil is currently being held in cold storage at her vet's clinic (for a fee) while we work on making final arrangements. The thought of having to bury and leave her on the eastside is heartbreaking but having her cremated is our only other option. We reached out to a nearby funeral chapel who is available to provide services on Monday, which is the deadline for retrieving Basil, but we are several hundred dollars short of what's needed. Any and all donations are helpful and appreciated!
